When an architect designs a building for themselves something special happens.  The entire process is experienced from an owner’s perspective, including land acquisition, site preparation, appraisals, financing, bid negotiation, and perhaps most importantly participating in the construction process as an owner.  This intimate involvement gives the architect an expanded appreciation of things to watch for, ways to pivot and save money, avoid delays, and ways to improve the end result on the fly, adding value to future design services provided to the architect’s clients.

This home in the woods was designed to be simple, elegant, lean and timeless.  Steep roofs provide visual drama, and provide useable spaces over select areas of the main level.  The width is set to allow clear span of floor trusses, eliminating an interior beam line and support columns.  Siting the home with a strong southern exposure allows for passive solar and the sloped site creates an opportunity for a walk-out/daylit lower level for future living, work and bedroom areas.
